Origin of the CDXVIIC
The National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century was organized during a meeting of the International Genealogical Congress at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, California, in July 1915. Mary Florence Taney was the founder of it as well as the founder of two other organizations: the National Society of Colonial Daughters and Dames of the Court of Honor. The Certificate of Incorporation was recorded in the District of Columbia on August 20, 1920, at 2:45 PM. It was amended March 11, 1963, by the National Executive Board and the Board of Management.
Object of the Society
The object of the National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century shall be:
- To aid in the preservation of the records and of the historic sites of our country;
- To foster interest in historical colonial research;
- To aid in the education of the youth of our country;
- To commemorate the noble and heroic deeds of our ancestors, the founders of our great Republic;
- To maintain zealously those high principles of virtue, courage, and patriotism which led to the independence of the Colonies and the foundation and establishment of the United States of America;
- To maintain a Library of Heraldry and preserve the lineage and Coats-of-Arms of our Armorial ancestors;
- To develop a library specializing in the seventeenth century American colonial data.
To Achieve These Goals
- We identify and mark historic sites (especially those with colonial period import)
- We acquire books and funds for our library
- We document our ancestors and the roles they played in the development of our great nation
- We maintain a museum in our National Headquarters building
- We maintain the grave of Pocahontas "Lady Rebecca Rolfe" in Gravesend, England, and have a scholarship in her honor for those of Native American descent interested in pursuing the medical professions
- We volunteer hours at the VA Hospitals and provide clothing and household goods to assist our veterans and help them rebuild civilian lives.
